Harpenden Town trounced league leaders Risborough Rangers 4-2 in a brilliant home win on Saturday in Rothamsted Park.
The victory, the third league win in a row for Harps, sees the side climb up the Spartan South Midlands League Division One to eigth spot in the table.
Manager Danny Plumb said:” It was a good result and we now need to get consistency in our performance and results.
“It is good to pull a string of wins together and move up the table. We need to build on that now and continue the progress.”
Harpenden started slowly and went down 0-1 when a Risborough cross sailed past everyone into the corner of the net.
Mike Davies was unlucky when his header was saved by the Rangers keeper from point blank range.
In the second half Ben Warren was pushed over in the box and took rhe penalty himself to score in the corner.
Then town went ahead 2-1 with a beautifully worked solo effort from Sam James who brought the ball in from the right beating several players then cooly chipped over the keeper from inside the box.
Risborough drew level when a corner took a deflection and went straight in the net.
But the home side went ahead again from a corner taken by Sam James which Matt Sutton headed into the top corner over the keeper from 15 yards out.
Finally on 91 minutes Charlie Gould picked up a goal kick, controlled the ball with one touch, and ran through to blast a rocket into the net from 30 yards for a marvellous goal which ended with a 4-2 win over the league leaders.
Harpenden’s next game is not until Tuesday October 4th away to Harefield United and then away again to Hatfield Town at the Gosling Stadium on Saturday Oct.8
