Harpenden Town soared to the top of the Spartan South Midlands Div. 1 beating Winslow United 3-1 on Tuesday night extending their magnificent winning streak to NINE matches.
Now Harps face Broadfields United, fourteenth in the league, away on bonfire night and a win would set their season alight with TEN straight victories.
Harpenden goalie Connor Sanson had a brilliant game saving two almost certain goals while centre forward Harry Hunt grabbed a brace of goals in a tight match played at a cracking pace.
Manager Danny Plumb said:” Winslow are the best team we have played this season and they will will be in the reckoning at the end.
“So I am really pleased we came back from 1-0 down. The team showed lots of character.
“Connor, in goal, produced a magnificent save when we were behind and also tipped over a free kick which was going into the net. But Saturday will be another tough match and we have to concentrate on getting another 3 points.”
Winslow went ahead after 20 minutes when No 10 Jim Davey with his back to goal pulled off an overhead kick which shot into the corner of the net for 0-1.
They could have been two ahead within two minutes but for Sanson’s point blank save.
Harpenden drew level when Harry Hunt raced onto a clearance, beat the last defender and shot round the keeper.
They went ahead after 66 minutes when a Mike Davies cross fell for Hunt who turned and slotted the ball away in the corner for his twelfth of the season.,
And Harpenden put the game away near the end when Tom Collin headed home a Phil Smeaton free kick for a final score of 3-1 putting Town at the top of the table.
After clocking their ninth straight win manager Plumb joked:” The way we started the season I would have taken two straight wins but full credit to the players.”
